Epiphany Declaration
P: . . . the mystery, . . . has now been revealed . . .
C: that . . . Gentiles are fellow heirs and fellow member of the body . . . in Christ Jesus through the gospel.
Welcome
As We Gather
Invocation
P: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C: Amen.
Confession of Sin
P: If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
C: But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
A Moment of Silence for Personal Reflection, Self–Examination, and Meditation.
P: Let us then confess our sins to God our Father.
C: Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways to the glory of your holy name. Amen.
Absolution
P: Almighty God in his mercy has given his Son to die for you and for his sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of the Word I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C: Amen.
Introit of the Day
P: [The Lord] brought me to the banqueting house,
C: and His banner over me was love.
P: Your steadfast love, O Lord, extends to the heavens,
C: Your faithfulness to the clouds.
P: Your righteousness is like the mountains of God;
C: Your judgments are like the great deep; man and beast You save, O Lord.
P: How precious is Your steadfast love, O God!
C: The children of mankind take refuge in the shadow of Your wings.
P: They feast on the abundance of Your house,
C: and You give them drink from the river of Your delights.
P: For with You is the fountain of life;
C: in Your light do we see light.
P: Glory be to the Father and to the Son
C: and to the Holy Spirit;
P: as it was in the beginning,
C: is now, and will be forever. Amen.
P: [The Lord] brought me to the banqueting house,
C: and His banner over me was love.
Kyrie
P: In peace let us pray to the Lord.
C: Lord, have mercy.
P: For the peace from above and for our salvation let us pray to the Lord.
C: Lord, have mercy.
P: For the peace of the whole world, for the well–being of the Church of God, and for the unity of all let us pray to the Lord.
C: Lord, have mercy.
P: For this holy house and for all who offer here their worship and praise let us pray to the Lord.
C: Lord, have mercy.
P: Help, save, comfort, and defend us, gracious Lord.
C: Amen.
Salutation
P: The Lord be with you.
C: And also with you.
Collect of the Day
P: Let us pray.
C: Almighty and everlasting God, who governs all things in heaven and on earth, mercifully hear the prayers of Your people and grant us Your peace through all our days; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
The Old Testament Reading
R: The Old Testament Reading for the Second Sunday after the Epiphany is from the 62nd chapter of Isaiah.
As we near the end of the writings of Isaiah, the prophet’s tone changes. He sees a bright future for the nation. God has promised to turn the fate of His people and bestow upon them great blessings. Isaiah breaks forth in prayer; a prayer that will not cease until God has acted on behalf of Israel.
Isaiah 62:1–5
1For Zion’s sake I will not keep silent,
And for Jerusalem’s sake I will not keep quiet,
Until her righteousness goes forth like brightness,
And her salvation like a torch that is burning.
2The nations will see your righteousness,
And all kings your glory;
And you will be called by a new name
Which the mouth of the LORD will designate.
3You will also be a crown of beauty in the hand of the LORD,
And a royal diadem in the hand of your God.
4It will no longer be said to you, “Forsaken,”
Nor to your land will it any longer be said, “Desolate;”
But you will be called, “My delight is in her,”
And your land, “Married;”
For the LORD delights in you,
And to Him your land will be married.
5For as a young man marries a virgin,
So your sons will marry you;
And as the bridegroom rejoices over the bride,
So your God will rejoice over you.
R: This is the Word of the Lord.
C: Thanks be to God.
Gradual

C: Praise the Lord, all nations!
Extol Him, all peoples!
For great is His steadfast love toward us,
and the faithfulness of the Lord endures forever.
Ascribe to the Lord the glory due His name;
bring an offering, and come into His courts!
The Epistle Reading
R: The Epistle Reading is from the 12th chapter of First Corinthians.
The church in Corinth had problems. Its members argued over who was the most “spiritual.” Their discussion included who performed their baptism and what spiritual gift they possessed. Attempting to bring unity and put an end to the debate, the Apostle Paul explains the nature and purpose of spiritual gifts. First and foremost all spiritual gifts are given by God—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The gifts are given to build up and encourage the church. No gift is greater than or less important than another gift.
I Corinthians 12:1–11
1Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I do not want you to be unaware. 2You know that when you were pagans, you were led astray to the mute idols, however you were led. 3Therefore I make known to you that no one speaking by the Spirit of God says, “Jesus is accursed;” and no one can say, “Jesus is Lord,” except by the Holy Spirit.
4Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. 5And there are varieties of ministries, and the same Lord. 6There are varieties of effects, but the same God who works all things in all persons.
7But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. 8For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; 9to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, 10and to another the effecting of miracles, and to another prophecy, and to another the distinguishing of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, and to another the interpretation of tongues. 11But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually just as He wills.
R: This is the Word of the Lord.
C: Thanks be to God.
Verse Before the Gospel
Alleluia. Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. Alleluia, alleluia.
The Holy Gospel Reading
P: The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the 2nd chapter, verses 1–11.
C: Glory to you, O Lord.
Our gospel lesson is the familiar account of Jesus turning water into wine. The Apostle John records this as Jesus’ first ever miracle or “sign.” There are a number of interesting facts to note. Jesus performs His first miracle at a wedding which is the first “institution” that God established. Jesus performs this sign in response to and somewhat in obedience to His mother’s request. And note, the wine that Jesus gives is better than the wine that was being served. What God gives is always better than what we have or expect.
John 2:1–11
1On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there; 2and both Jesus and His disciples were invited to the wedding. 3When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to Him, “They have no wine.”
4And Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does that have to do with us? My hour has not yet come.”
5His mother said to the servants, “Whatever He says to you, do it.”
6Now there were six stone waterpots set there for the Jewish custom of purification, containing twenty or thirty gallons each.
7Jesus said to them, “Fill the waterpots with water.” So they filled them up to the brim.
8And He said to them, “Draw some out now and take it to the headwaiter.”
So they took it to him. 9When the headwaiter tasted the water which had become wine, and did not know where it came from (but the servants who had drawn the water knew), the headwaiter called the bridegroom, 10and said to him, “Every man serves the good wine first, and when the people have drunk freely, then he serves the poorer wine; but you have kept the good wine until now.”
11This beginning of His signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and manifested His glory, and His disciples believed in Him.
P: This is the Gospel of the Lord.
C: Praise to you, O Christ.
Sermon
The Nicene Creed
P: Let us confess our common faith using the words of the Nicene Creed.
C: I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible.
And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only–begotten Son of God, begotten of his Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day he rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And he will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end.
And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.
Prayers of the Church
Each petition concludes:
P: Lord, in Your mercy,
C: hear our prayer.
The Lord’s Prayer
P: Let us join our hearts and our voices in the prayer our Savior taught us to pray, saying:
C: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.
Benediction
P: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face to shine upon you and be gracious unto you. The Lord lift up His countenance upon you and give you peace.
C: Amen.
